What is Dental Sedation?

Dental sedation is a technique used to help people feel relaxed or even sleepy during their dental procedures. Sedation dentistry allows you to feel more comfortable during treatment, overcoming phobia or delaying the care your smile demands. It can also be used to manage discomfort during longer procedures or to plan multiple treatments in one visit. There are several types of dental sedation we offer, including oral sedation, and nitrous gas.

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation involves taking a prescription-strength pill or liquid just before your appointment to help you relax. The medication can range from mild to moderate and is usually taken about an hour before the procedure. Patients who receive oral sedation remain conscious but are more relaxed during their appointment. Most experience an amnesic effect, so they remember little to nothing about their visit.

Nitrous Oxide Gas (Laughing Gas)

Nitrous oxide gas, also known as laughing gas, is a type of light sedation that is inhaled through a soft nosepiece. This gas helps you feel calm and relaxed, and it can also reduce discomfort during the procedure. Nitrous gas is a mild sedative, so you’re completely awake throughout the appointment. Most people compare it to having a couple of glasses of wine. Best of all, it’s quickly reversible, so you won’t need anyone to drive you home.

IV sedation is a deeper form of sedation that is administered through an intravenous drip. Patients who receive IV sedation are often completely unaware of their surroundings and feel as if they are asleep. IV sedation is typically reserved for more complex procedures or patients who experience extreme dental anxiety. For this method, we bring in a dental anesthesiologist; there’s no need to visit an offsite surgical facility.
